Comcast Treats the Girls Scouts of South Arizona to a Private Movie Screening of Hidden Figures
Hidden Figures, the Oscar winning, 20th Century Fox film, opened on January 6. On Tuesday, April 11, Comcast Arizona hosted a private screening of the movie for the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona at the local Comcast office.
The screening was a fun-filled and educational night with guests including: leaders from Raytheon, Dr. Amanda H. Goodson, Lakindra Francis-Jones, Amarie Whetten, and Misha Dawson. The movie-goers were able to participate in a discussion panel with, Amanda, LaKindra, Amarie, and Misha. Before the movie screening, the panel shared their inspiring and personal stories about having the courage and confidence to pursue their dreams. After the movie, the panel answered questions and challenged the young women to think about their stories and to pursue their passions in STEM and other professions.
“What a fabulous evening. Thank you all so much. It was wonderful to see my daughter so energized by STEM and the female engineers! Movie was fabulous too.” said Rachel Miller, a parent of one of the Girls Scouts.
The girls were also entered into a raffle to win a lap top. We gave away two laps, one to Kaitlyn M., who is a teen Girl Scout soon on her way to college and one to Elizabeth P., a Junior Girl Scout who was so excited to have a laptop of her very own!
Hidden Figures depicts the untold story of a group of African American female mathematicians, Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae), that were pivotal to NASA during the early years of the US space program. In particular, they were the brains behind the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit.
