Inspiring Students to See Beyond the Classroom

In honor of National Mentoring Month, we’re highlighting our partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Arizona and the Beyond School Walls Program (BSW).

This youth mentorship collaboration formed when we launched our new Center of Excellence Customer Care Center in Tucson in 2016.

Students are matched in one-on-one mentoring relationships with Comcast professionals. Employee mentors (Bigs) inspire their mentees (Littles) to one-day achieve professional success. Littles who attend Prince Elementary School in Tucson get first-hand experiences in the corporate world.

Many of the Littles are disenfranchised youth with challenges ranging from low-income, single-parent families, to homelessness. The program provides Littles with stable adult mentors and exposure to a work environment. Once a week, they get together during the employees’ lunch hour and spend the hour working on academics, playing, and eating a healthy lunch.

“Our Bigs in the BSW program impact our Littles in such positive ways. Our Littles are showing greater confidence levels and better communication skills,” said Valerie Propst, Enrollment Specialist and Site-Based Program Coordinator, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Arizona. “They are also learning how to develop a lasting bond with a friend. I am very fortunate to be able to observe our Littles’ growth each time they meet with their Big!”

“Being a Big has shown me the importance of being a role model for my children as I see how kids interact in a school setting,” said Thomas, Xfinity Mobile Supervisor. “I teach my Little social skills along with giving him advice on how to handle situations he is facing in school and at home.”
